Spent half an hour last night with my original heads working out what sort of lift I'll be able to use with the new combination of valves and different valve seals.

I really didn't give much thought to the valve seals, but the ones that came in the engine overhaul kit I bought for the short block (a 2000 Vortec) appear to have a much lower profile than the ones I have been using up to this point contributing to a higher lift tolerance.

So after assembling a new valve, a new seal and the same Comp retainer that is on my heads currently, measured seal to retainer clearance now checks in at .630" on the intake and .545" on the exhaust.

A nice side benefit to the new combination is that there is enough clearance now to use a valve seal on the exhaust side. 083 heads were not equipped with seals on the exhaust valves (neither set of my heads had them anyways). When I put my ported heads on my car I measured to see if using a seal on the exhaust valve was an option but there simply wasn't enough retainer to seal clearance with the lift of my current Lunati cam. While this really didn't pose any problems, I did still get the occasional smokey startup. Now that I will have the clearance, I will be installing seals on the exhaust valves.

Just to bring this thread to a close, here is the motor just before going into the car.

Motor has been in for several weeks now, tune is nailed down and it is driving great.

Pleased I made the decision to take on this project as it has prevented my car from getting parked this summer when I ran into issues with the original engine. Had I not had this engine prepared and ready to go when I did, the oil pump failure, and then emission test failure would have had my car parked while that engine was pulled, rebuilt, and put back in.

Rather than start a new post I thought I'd ad on to this one as the content is similar to the Vortec heads I removed from the engine this thread was about.

A while back a friend of mine picked up a 350 Vortec for next to nothing in the hopes it could be brought back to life as I did with the motor currently in my car. For the price, we reasoned that even if the short block turned out to be junk (it was), that the Vortec heads would be well worth the price paid for the motor. Prior to tearing down the short block, my friend gave me the heads to see what I could do with them...…...this is what I was presented with.

I was less than optimistic about the outcome of this project! However, I reasoned that it cost basically nothing but some time to have a go at them and see what would come of them, so I proceeded.

As is my usual routine the heads spent a considerable amount of time in my electrolysis tank getting rid of all the rust.

I don't know why it still surprises me, but the results of the electrolysis were excellent as they usually are.

Threw some paint on to keep them from flash rusting afterwards.

Gave the exhaust ports a quick clean up.

Unfortunately after putting the effort into these heads, we tore the short block down to find out it was junk......now the owner is thinking of going a different direction with his engine plans and is thinking of selling these heads along with the dual plane manifold he picked up to go along with them.
